TALES FROM THE TAVERN ARCHIVE

These are my thoughts, not those of Woody’s Tavern collectively, or any of our staff or patrons. If you care to share email me at booking@woodystaverntexas.com

Hey Tavern Patrons,

2008 is in full swing and in my usual fashion, it took me a month to update the Tales from the Tavern. I have been pondering the state of things, with the Economy on the slide, an Election fast approaching, and our boys and girls still over seas protecting our way of life, and I took a moment and realized that some things will always be beyond our control and others we will just have to wonder about, Britney Spears for instance or the music coming out of all the major labels, the DOW, Pakistan, etc... (not in any particular order).

I for one have decided to simplify, and in doing so enjoying the simple pleasures of life.

Of course, this includes sitting in my favorite watering hole, enjoying a cold beer and some laughs with my friends and family. I relish in the fact that I can walk thru the doors of Woody’s and always find at least one of the above. Now, I know your thinking wait a minute, your just promoting your establishment, well hell yes! and no! I love this bar, my best friends and I got together and opened the place, and it continues to grow and metamorphisize each and every year. That my friends is owed to each and everyone of you, who crosses the threshold. And I thank each and everyone of you for sharing your lives with me, and the rest of the crew at Woody’s.

Come out in ’08, we have all the usual games & recreations, some kick ass new Import and Micro Beers behind the bar, and I am cooking up some really cool live shows through out the year.

Returning this year we will have the 1st Tuesday Acoustic shows with Buddy Huffman and the talented musicians he brings with him, our Winter Bar Olympics start in February and the Summer Olympics in August, and of course our Charity Golf Tournament. Check out this webpage or our myspace for more details.

I wish everyone a healthy and successful New Year!

Peace,
Bryan

The time of year is here again, stores are putting out the Christmas lights, wreaths, and candy, Traffic is multiplying as shoppers try and get ahead this year instead of last minute shopping. Here at Woody's this time of year spawns something a little different, it's time to dig deep and help those around us. Over the course of the year we spend a lot of time working with local charities, and last year we decided to help out the local Make A Wish Foundation. Our Contributions helped to send a child and his family to Disney World.

So this year we are at it again with the 2nd Annual One More Year Another Grey Hair Yuletide Gathering on Tuesday December 4th. The evening will have singer/ songwriters performing, a silent auction, and plenty more. Buddy Huffman, Magee Payne, Phil Pritchett, Kurt South, Jordan Mycoskie, Austin Collins, Greg Schroeder and many more will perform. It is a great evening of good music, cheap drink specials, and contributing to a great cause.

I wish everyone a great Holiday Season.

Peace,
Beckman

Football is officially back!!! And cooler tempratures should be quick to follow. Once again, we at Woody's have upped the stakes for our patrons, Woodys now has 5 Big Screen HD Projectors and 7 LCD Flat Screens, bringing all the best games from the NFL and College every weekend. Also, If you haven't checked out the concert calendar, you better, in September alone, some of the best are hitting the stage.

Woody's the original home of Texas/Red Dirt music in Cityview, never duplicated, never beaten! Dont forget we have Daily Drink Specials, and Happy Hour 7 days a week. 4 Pool Tables, Free Darts and Shuffleboard, PGA, Golden Tee, Buck Hunter, and a great Digital Jukebox when the bands and games are through. And dont worry the recent smoking laws wont effect the Tavern, in fact we are adding more smoke eaters to provide a better smoke free environment. Come check out all the changes for yourself, bring some friends. have a cold one, and dont forget to say Hi.

Peace,
Beckman

Here we are again,

I have let the Tales go stale for a month or two, my apologies.

I had a few friends from out of state give me a little ribbing for not keeping up, sorry Dewayne. It's all myspace's fault it's so damn easy to blog. It is summer time right around the corner and thanks to the recent weather the lakes are gonna be good for a while this year. The rivers are flowing and the Music Festivals are in full swing. Don't forget when your done enjoying the sun, Woody's is the best place to cool off and enjoy some great music. For all of you not aware, there are some kick ass artists coming up and down 35 and playing the Tavern stage. Check out the calendar if you haven't heard of the artists you soon will.

I was just reminiscing about the days when you could see Boland, or Randy on our stage with 20 other people, now you have to fight the crowds just to get a glimpse. So take a chance, come on down the Woody's and see the next big act testing their chops on the Tavern Stage. I recommend them all of course, but just to name a few, Adam Hood, Sunny Sweeney, The Gougers, The Ringers, Macon Greyson, Bart Crow, Backporch Mary, etc.. etc.. and so forth.

I hope everyone takes the time to enjoy the beautiful days of spring and summer ahead.

Peace,
Beckman

It's March and we all know what that means, NCAA Basketball March Madness is here and we have the package and are opening early each and everyday for all the games.

And if that's not enough basketball for you, the Mavericks are headed to the playoffs and followed by their arena mates the Dallas Stars, come on out for great drink specials and all the playoff action on one of our 30+TV's.

Hey Kids,

The new year is here and in usual fashion, Woody's is having a great Party to kick off '07.

Come on out and bring all your friends and enjoy great music from Brandon Rhyder, Mike Mancy & Magee Payne, the cover is only $20 and includes munchies and a champagne toast.

As always, Woody's is your headquarters for the NCAA College Bowl Series, the National Championship game on Jan. 8th on all our big screens and coming to you in Stereo Sound.

If your looking at the the calendar and wondering why no music til the 13th well, since most of the musicians are tearing up the slopes in Colorado, we like to take the time to update and improve the sound system and the Tavern in general, so be sure to come out and support all the great artists throughout '07 at Woody's. All of us at Woody's wish all of you and your families a very happy and prosperous new year!

Hey All,

Here we are again, Football is in full swing and the Nation’s Top Teams are fighting for the top spots in the BCS Polls. For more Sports news and all our Woody’s picks click on the sports banner above. Be sure to check out Honest John’s Corner, it puts a smile on my face every week.

Now on to a few of my favorite things…this week kicks off our new monthly music series with Bleu Edmondson on the last Tuesday of each month, Fred Andrews from Honeybrowne joins Bleu this Month, and the legend himself Rusty Weir is scheduled to entertain the crew on Halloween. Come on out to the Tavern and pull up a chair and listen to your favorite songwriters perform their tunes and add a little storytelling to spice up your favorite songs. Each and every Friday and Saturday night, Woody’s provides the best Texas and Oklahoma have to offer. I personally try and bring to the Tavern stage the brightest and most talented artists I can find. Come see some of the new blood that is barking on the heels of those Artists that have achieved great success and still make Woody’s Tavern their home. It is the coolest feeling in the world to turn on CMT, GAC, The Wolf, The Twister, and X Country on XM and see and hear my brothers and sisters. I get chills seeing Randy, Stoney, Mike and the Eli Young boys, playing in front of the nation. It pumps me up to see what we know as “Texas Country” grow and envelope the whole country. Don’t miss your chance to support the next generation of musicians and songwriters burning up the highways spreading a little bit of soul, rhythm and blood along the way. Check out the Woody’s calendar pick a date and come out and see for yourself, Micky & the Motorcars, Full Throttle, Ryan Bales Band, Darren Kozelsky, Mike Mancy, Magee Payne and many more.

And last but not least, the time has come again to use your voice and your heart and influence those people down in Austin and in the nations capitol. It is time to vote again.

It doesn’t matter if you are Democrat or Republican, Purple or Green; get off your ass and vote. I myself am throwing my vote to the Kinkster, “the good Shepard” Kinky Friedman for Governor.

That is all for now.

Hello Everyone,

Allright, If you have not already seen the banner located above this very text, we are proud to be hosting a benefit show on April 18th to support the March of Dimes. Tommy Allsup and his grandson Austin have put together a little gathering of musicians to pay tribute the life of & music of Cindy Walker. Recently Willie Nelson released an album of Cindy Walkers music, I did not realize how many of her tunes I knew, Ray Charles’ version of “You Don’t Know Me” has always been a favorite of mine, and I never took the time to know who wrote it. Cindy was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in ’97 and passed away this past March.

Come out for a great night of entertainment and show your support for a great cause.

Don’t forget the NBA and NHL playoffs are fast approaching, and the Tavern is still the best place to catch a game. Well, its short and sweet this time. End this one with a song,

you give your hand to me
and then you say hello
and I can hardly speak
my heart is beating so
and anyone can tell
you think you know me well
but you don't know me

No, you don't know the one
who dreams of you each night
and longs to kiss your lips
and longs to hold you tight
to you I am just a friend
that's all I've ever been
no you don't know me

But I never knew
the art of making love
though my heart aches with love for you

afraid and shy I let my chance goes by
the chance that you might love me too

you give your hand to me
and then you say goodbye
I watch you walk away beside the lucky guy

you'll never ever know
the one who loved you so
no, you don't know me

Be safe. Peace,

Bryan

Hey Everyone,

Spring is here! I don't know about all of you but I am chomping at the bit for the lakes and rivers to warm up! Break out the drums and start your rain dances, we need some more of the wet stuff to sustain us thru the summer.

Well, boys and girls, this Wednesday Randy Rogers makes his triumphant return to the Tavern accompanied by the magic man on fiddle, Brady Black. T.J. McFarland is cruising in from Red Dirt Country to help out with the opening slot. Then as if it wasn't enough, Thursday night, local rockers Brandon Lea of Flickerstick fame and Ryan Higgs will be performing for the first time here at Woody's, I am sure some of their musical cohorts will drop by and pick a few.

The calendar is updated, check it out for upcoming shows and sporting events. Its March and the madness we call NCAA basketball starts the tourney on the 14th.

Also, tThe Guiness starts flowing bright and early on Friday the 17th to help celebrate St. Patricks Day.

Hey All,

Here we are again, I do apologize for the time between entries, I have to admit I got a little wrapped up in a member of the opposite sex, We all know how that can be, one moment your trucking along in your daily life and the next, its a car wreck and she is dating someone else. But no bitterness here! Who could be bitter when Winter is slowly receding, the Olympics are here!!! I had to throw in the DVD Miracle, last night just to get the goose-bumps early. The US Team is highly favored again, and if you did not know it, Woody's has 29 TV's tuned into your favorite events. Also in the sports world, NASCAR is back for all of you who like watching excessively fast left turns, come out and watch the Daytona 500 on the 19th, and if you have the desire Rich is holding his 1st annual Brisket Cook Off to feed the hordes of race car fans.

In the Music news: The Tavern has some great shows throughout the month of February, including a special show on Tuesday the 28th, FAT TUESDAY! MARDI GRAS!!! come out and show us your...... support for Local Breast Cancer Charities, a percentage of the $5 cover and 100% of all Party Beads sold will be donated. I am very excited to announce, Wed. March 8th, one of the Taverns great musical alumni will be returning for an acoustic show, Randy Rogers and Brady Black will be performing, come early and stay late, it should be a night to remember. Also in March, Mickey & the Motorcars, Bonnie Bishop, the Dedringers, Macon Greyson and many more, check the calendar for details.

A quote to make you think.

That is all for now,

Well. It has been since Sept. that I stepped up to the plate and puts some thoughts out there in the internetverse we have all come to surf and play in. Funny how the words surf and play had such different meaning, ten years ago………hmmm……………nah! That’s a rant for another day. Steve Jobs, Apple, Microsoft, hell they are the leaders of the new religion……..but there I go again. Well, well, well, what to write? I am at a loss for words still. Tell you what, Who out there wants to put some thoughts down about Woody’s, the music, the sports, the staff, a new t-shirt design, any suggestions you want. That’s right, here is my e-mail, lets use this time to send in your compliments, gripes, ideas. Send them to booking@woodystaverntexas.com I will post the more creative ones, right here in tales form the tavern. Have a great safe month.

I am going to start this one off, with a BIG HELL YEAH!!!! Hooray for Football!!!!! It is official, the TCU Horn Frogs kicked off with a major upset of the Oklahoma Sooners.

I have a feeling a lot of people lost some dough on that game. That is why I love college football, no matter what two teams line up on the ball on Saturday, anything can and will happen. Well, Fall is here and so are some new drink specials, every Monday we have $6 Domestic Pitchers, and in addition to the $2 Longnecks on Thursday, we have added $1 Domestic Drafts, and a late night Chips and Queso Bar with Homemade Salsa(made by Bryan that very afternoon).

Also, to go along with our already successful Acoustic shows on Tuesdays at the Tavern we will be featuring a bi-monthly pickers party the last Tuesday of the Month. This Month, Brings Ryan Bingham as our host with a plethora of musicians to join him. This is not a traditional song swap, this will be a sidemen extravaganza with the best guitar slingers, fiddle players, dobro, mando, banjo pickers we can invite. Come join us for the 1st Beaver Jam, Tuesday September 27th.

And we would not be Woody’s if we did not have the best of local and regional Texas Roots Music, This month come out and see Wade Bowen, Bleu Edmondson, Jason Boland, Micky & the Motorcars, Phil Pritchett and many others. Get here early for some sports fun and stay late for the great musical entertainment.

All right, everyone travel safe, fly low and avoid radar. Please send your prayers out to the 100’s of thousand’s of victims of Hurricane Katrina.

Hey Everyone,

This one is short and sweet. I have to get ready for work but I know this has long been over due. First, new tracks on the jukebox, check out Mcclure, Pritchett, Bleu, and Peter Dawson. We have not been sleeping on the job, I just happen to have the busiest sound engineer in town, helping me out. If you guys like what your hear, next time you see Barry give him a slap on the back. Second, football is looming around the corner and we are going to be bringing you some of our picks for the season as well as the games of the week on our calendar. Rich and Todd are brewing up some more sports tidbits for the page, so it looks like the Tavern the site is about to tickle all your senses. Third but not last, if it was not enough that I sling my verbs and nouns at you in this little section - I will be bringing you the top five albums in my player every few months and interviews with some of the artists that perform or stop in woody’s to boot. And last but not least, hockey is back so mark your calendar Oct. 5th when your Dallas Stars will take the ice. That is all for now and don’t worry, I will be back with a rant or review or something real soon.

Peace,
Bryan

Hey Everyone,

Well the last time I sat down to put my thoughts out to you, I was in a weird place, a man I never really new beyond a handshake and a smile passed away suddenly. Often this brings people to a time of inward thoughts. Today, this little thought process actually started off after an exhausting night of work and a few too many drinks, but here goes.
It was December and I was out in Dallas to enjoy the Songwriter Benefit at Poor David’s Pub, myself and a good friend Eli had many a jagermiester and a few beers, when I drunkenly stumbled into a conversation with a hero of mine. I need to interject here to help the significance of the story, In my lifetime I have been very blessed in the number of talented musicians that I have had the opportunity to call my friends, and also the many more that I have been able to share a drink or a conversation with. I only say this to explain my situation, before “Texas Music” was a title, there was only one “country artist” I would even listen too, Jack Ingram. Hell, I saw him at campfires and fraternity parties before I realized what he was about. But his words, his lyrics, reflected or connected to a part of my life that I did not know that I could still care about. Long story short, I chose this drunken moment to share these thoughts with Jack. And in the meat of our conversation, in my haze I thought, there is no way this man believes a word I am saying and he must be patronizing me. So I asked him” if he indeed was F*@&ing with me.” Jack of course responded, not just “NO” but “Hell No”, so our conversation continued for a few more minutes, and I think Jack realized just how many Jagers I had imbibed, when he turned to me and asked” if I was F*@&ing with him”. Our conversation came to a quick close, but the story continues. In my drunken stupor I then beat myself mentally for “germing” a hero of mine. To this day, He may think I was a drunken fan, but I know that he is a man who writes music that fits my life, and for that I respect the hell out of him.

All right, here is why this little ramble came around, for all of you who read No Depression Magazine, and explore the world of Americana and Roots Music outside of our little two state metroplex, you might have seen this article in the May/June 05 issue. And for those of you that don’t it might open your ears and eyes. In an interview with John Darnielle of the the group the Mountain Goats, he was quoted “Sometimes people who are going thought the short dark spurts of earthly hell that everybody at some point goes through will run into my stuff and find it useful during those times, sure, but by the time I get to meet these people, they’ve usually come out on the other side of it all, and then I mostly feel honored to have been able to do for somebody else what music’s always done for me: held my hand when I was walking down dark alleys and couldn’t see my way out. I know that this must sound terribly corny, but it’s really how I feel, and it’s really why I write; for the people who might have some use for what I do.”

I sit down on many a night and try to put my thoughts to lyric, I have hundreds of saved napkins, notebooks, and word files, but songwriting is a gift. It all boils down to the fact that I am a music lover, it started with a catchy tune or lyric, and now I key into instrumental changes, and rhythms, it is all music. It all goes to show, that music is a reflection of life, be it in your own voice or a voice of another.

Peace,
Bryan

“Remember an everyday drive can be an adventure if you look for something new on the same old traveled roads” Me

Hey Everyone,

Well, I don’t have a lot of news at this juncture, so I thought I would share a little Kerouac with you from his novel The Road. It is amazing that times have changed so much only to remain the same.

Rickey was drunk: now all he was sayin was,”Dah you go, man dah you go, man,”It had been a long day. None of us knew what was going on, or what the Good Lord appointed. Poor little Johnny fell asleep on my arm. We drove back to Sabinal. On the way we pulled up sharp at a roadhouse on Highway 99. Rickey wanted one last beer. In back of the roadhouse were trailers and tents and a few rickety motel-style rooms. I inquired about the price and it was two bucks. I asked Terry how about it, and she said fine because we the kid on our hands now and had to make him comfortable. So after a few beers in the saloon, where sullen Okies reeled to the music of a cowboy band, Terry and I and Johnny went into a motel room and got ready to hit the sack. Ponzo kept hanging around: he had no place to sleep. Rickey slept at his fathers house in the vineyard shack.

“Where do you live, Ponzo?” I asked.

“Nowhere, man I’m supposed to live with Big Rosey but she threw me out last night. I’m gonna get my truck and sleep in it.” Guitars tinkled. Terry and I gazed at the stars together and kissed. “Manana,” she said Everything’ll be all right tomorrow, don’t you think, Sal-honey, man?”

Take what you will, from this little excerpt. It makes me think that there is still a lot of normalcy left to be found in this world. It is not unlike a situation I experienced at the River Road Ice House and later that evening in the Compound out back. I think Life is a reflection of the past with new threads, and hairstyles. New experiences we share today, are the same experiences our elders reflect back on. Live life to the fullest.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the family of Kirby Standley. The long time Road Manager and Good Friend of the Roger Creager Band, was struck ill on Sunday..

“Remember an everyday drive can be an adventure if you look for something new on the same old traveled roads” Me

Hey Everyone,

Well here we are again sitting on the edge of the bottomless pit, I affectionately call Summer time. It is May, the NBA playoffs are in full swing, and god willing the Mavericks will finish off the series with Houston and move on to Phoenix. Normally during this time of year I would be yelling at the television over a bad off sides call or a missed five man advantage, but alas Hockey is still on the back of a Milk Carton. So I make do with Basketball. But I digress, Come out and show your support for Dirk, Mike, and the rest of the Mavericks being brought to you on 25 Televisions and Surround Sound.

Next on the agenda, If you have not heard Woody’s Tavern is not only a great place to catch a game, but we feature live Music on Friday and Saturday nights, Woody’s brings the best of Roots Rock/Americana/Texas Country to Cityview, Such artists as Randy Rogers, Bleu Edmondson, Mike McClure, and great local talents like Macon Greyson, Mike Mancy, and Magee Payne. If you enjoy music with as many different flavors as Baskin Robbins, come out and see it for yourself.

This Friday, one of the Hardest Rockin Bands in the land, Macon Greyson will be celebrating the release of their new album Translate, with Full Throttle kicking of the show. Music Charge is $8. Saturday brings another great performer from D town, Darren Kozelsky and his Band with Micheal Padgett and Dusty Deaton doing the opening honors. Music Charge is $6.

Just announced local Rock Band, Edgewater will be performing acoustic with Loaded Moses, on Tuesday the 17th. The newest addition to our music line up is already developing quit a buzz, come check out the Third Rock Acoustic Series for yourselves.

And Last but not least, this Wednesday marks the Return of Tim Putnam & Eric Sams to the stage for a little bit of Comedy. Batten down the hatches, it is Tim & Eric let loose with the microphone. The show begins at 9:30, and there is no cover.

“Remember an everyday drive can be an adventure if you look for something new on the same old traveled roads” Me

Hey Everyone,

I want to start off with a big thanks, to Matt Martindale and Buddy Huffman for the great Songwriter Show they performed on this past Monday. The crowd was very attentive, the turn out was a little smaller than our usual one, but I think a full day of baseball had everyone worn out. In May, Travis Linville will be accompanying Buddy and we will be returning to the First Tuesday on the 3rd. I am pleased to announce that Leroy the Prophet will be joining Loaded Moses for our “Third Rock” Acoustic Series on the 19th of April. It is a new experience at the Tavern, but so far the performances have been incredible. The next few weeks and all of May, host some great performers every Friday and Saturday night. Listen to the Woody’s Tavern Jukebox to hear some past performances. We have just added, two great tracks from Stoney Larue. Another huge thanks, goes out to the Tavern’s favorite son, Tim Putnam and his crew of funny men for an extremely successful comedy showcase. Tim, Eric, Devin, and Loren put on four 20-minute sets and then joined each other on stage for a little improv. It was a great crowd, and we will be having them back next month on Wednesday, May 11th.

All right the business is out of the way, I have not ranted or really put a lot of personal mumbo jumbo in the Tales section in a while but here goes. I believe in the world we live in of Lawyers, Politicians, and self-proclaimed gurus, it is extremely important to carry out handshake agreements, and promises. A mans’ or woman’s word should be all that is necessary to conduct business in a modern world. In the five years of the Tavern, hell my whole life, I have created many new friends from patrons to musicians. All of these people have come to trust me, knowing that when I say I will or will not do something, that I am a man of my word. I do not let my business sense change that. I believe that is one of the reasons for our little bars great success. In a nutshell, stand behind your words! Success will follow, without breaching verbal contracts! Money is easy to make, Bridges are hard to rebuild.

That is all!

Peace,
Bryan

Hey Everyone,

I am very excited today, If you have not had a chance, take a listen to our new Jukebox, it has live recordings from past shows at the Tavern, which include Wade Bowen, Brandon Rhyder, Matt Powell, and Micky & the Motorcars. With a whole lot of other great artists to follow. You can listen to your favorite bands at work or home. Last night marked the return of our Songwriter Showcase with a new format, Buddy Huffman (of Macon Greyson) is our master of ceremonies and every month Buddy is inviting one of his musical Heroes or Friends to accompany him on stage. Last night, Matt Powell took the stage with his guitar blazing. For all of you that don’t know Matt has several blues, bluegrass, and old-fashioned songwriting albums under his belt, and is currently wielding his axe with Wade Bowen & West 84. I really enjoyed the show last night, it is a lot of fun to watch two performers share the stage and share songs with each other as well as the audience. Keep your eyes peeled, next months guest will be announced real soon.

All right, for all of those headed out this weekend, Friday night, Micky & the Motorcars and Magee Payne will perform. Music Charge is $6. Saturday night the Randy Rogers Band and Steve Tenpenny Band will perform, please get here early, cover starts at 6 and is $12, it is sure to be a sell out. Don’t wait till 10 or 11, or you will be waiting in line.
Also this month, we have a comedy show with Tavern Doorman, Tim Putnam and his Friends, and starting this month the third Tuesday of each month will be an acoustic rock show, hosted by Loaded Moses and featuring different guests. Come see another side of songwriting at its best.

Hey Everyone,

It is another great day in Cowtown. I am getting ready to kick off another great weekend of killer music at the Tavern with Max Stalling tonight and Doug Moreland tomorrow. Our Songwriters Showcase returns to the 1st Tuesday of every month in March with a new format. My friend and musical bad ass Buddy Huffman will be hosting our “ Heroes and Friends” Music Series. Every month Buddy and another artist will perform and discuss why they are who they are, and why the music is the way it is. Also new to the lineup in April, the 3rd Tuesday of every month will feature an evening with local rock act Loaded Moses performing acoustically and bringing along some of their fellow performers. Come check it out. I am sure most of you have noticed that we are preparing to have live sound files from shows at Woody’s. Take the time to listen to Artists you know or try out some of those you haven’t heard. And finally, I know it has been months but the new merchandise has arrived and the new merch page will be up and running as of March.
On the sports tip, Hockey is officially called off, but on a good note Baseball is less than three months away. Our home team, TCU has already kicked off their season, if you have not made it out to a game, go check out the new stadium. Well that is all for know, until the next time.

Bryan

Hey Everyone,

We have an exciting Month ahead for us, the Holidays are around the corner and the Music and Sports are on a roll. This week, the Three Fools on Three Stools will perform their own brand of humor and songwriting on Thursday. Be prepared Friday night, the Randy Rogers Band will be ripping the roof off of the Tavern, get here early, it will be one in one out by ten. Brandon Rhyder will open the show around 9:30. And on the other points of the compass, Tennessee faces off against Auburn for the SEC championship, and for all the boys over seas Army and Navy put their mettle to the test.

If you haven’t had your fill of Football by now, Monday night the Cowboys return to primetime to play the Seahawks at 8 pm. Tuesday, I am proud to announce that one of my favorite singer/songwriters Mike McClure will be returning to the Tavern for our Songwriter Series. Hey Everyone,

Just getting around to this little piece of the greater puzzle I call my life, I have been out and about checking out bands and catching cool shows all over town.

I had the chance to see the great Joe Ely a few weeks ago at Sons of Herman Hall. What an amazing show, just Joe and John L. Guzman on Accordian, he played all of his greats and told a few amazing stories in between. Last night I caught Django Walker at a mid week Ft. Worth gig, the band is tighter then ever. We should have him and the band back on the stage at Woody’s very soon.

This upcoming month has plenty of great shows, and the NCAA playoffs are fast approaching. Come out and see for yourselves. This month, Brandon Jenkins, Stoney Larue, Matt Powell, Jordan Mycoskie, Dusty Deaton and Michael Padgett, to name a few.

In December, Mike McClure will be performing at our Songwriter Showcase, and the Randy Rogers Band will usher in the Big 12 Championship weekend.

We have the Election behind us now, and it is time for all of us to grab a hold of the reigns and move forward towards bettering ourselves. Walk outside, look around, run, jog, read, write, challenge yourself to exercise your brain, creativity, imagination. Have some fun.

Have a great safe week,

Ok, what new at Woody’s?

This Thursday the Jordan Mycoskie Band and Dusty Deaton and Micheal Padgett will perform, all shows will start approximately at 9.30, we have $2 longnecks all night and $1.50 Coors, Coors Light, and Miller Lite Pints. On Friday, the next generation of Texas guitar slingers, Seth James will thrill the crowd with his own ‘blues inflected country rock’, the Jackson Taylor Band will open the show with a little ‘Outlaw Country’. Don’t miss out on two great nights of music. If you are tired of sitting at home and watching one game on the boob tube, come out to the Tavern and watch all your favorite teams on one of our big screens.

I am lacking in creativity today, so I am going to go out and try to drum some up. I will bring back some kind of interesting story or rant for you in the next “tales from the tavern”

Hey All,

What can I say about this weekend, Holy S*#@, the Randy Rogers Band brought almost 500 people through the door Friday night, It is so much fun to see hard working bands experience there just rewards. The band rocked with songs from all three of their CD’s, if you have not picked up the most recent one Rollercoaster, you have not experienced what this band can do. Last night, I got the chance to enjoy another Randy Rogers experience, at the Clubhouse Concerts. Randy and Kent Finley (of Cheatham Street) swapped songs and humor on the stage. Kent is one of Randy’s dear friends and mentors. And the audience was completely enthralled in the moment.

How about them Red Sox, the mighty Yankees have fallen. We are your World Series head quarters, come on out and see the History in the making. The Sox go to St. Louis for the next three games starting on Tuesday, and will return to Boston on Saturday and Sunday (if necessary).

This weekend brings another great set of performers to the stage, Thursday night; Mike Mancy and his band will perform with Badwater, from Oklahoma, opening the show. Friday night the transplants from Idaho, Micky & the Motorcars will have their CD Release party with Copperhead opening the show. Take the time and see the Motorcars for yourself, it wont be long before they are selling out the Tavern.

Well, It is the first of the month again and I am proud to announce another great Songwriter Showcase, Tuesday November 2nd, Buddy Huffman (of Macon Greyson) and Mike Eli (of Eli Young Band) will be sharing their talents with the crew at Woody’s. Drop in for an intimate experience, a dark room, candles, two guitars, and the stories behind the songs. Magee Payne will open the show about 8:30.

As usual, the Football is kicking off every Saturday and Sunday at 11, join us for the countdown to the National Championship and the Super Bowl. We have the Best Drink Specials Every Day. Have a great safe week.

Hey Everyone,

Well it has been fairly busy at the Tavern, between, the great crowds showing their support for the talented artists appearing on the stage, to the overwhelming numbers of football fanatics coming out each Saturday and Sunday to root on their favorite teams. This past week alone, we had an amazing acoustic series with Matt Powell and Seth James, it was loose, and the groove was outstanding. Seth told me it had been two years since his last acoustic show. His wife Jessica accompanied the boys for a song or two, and then took over for a while. For those of you not familiar, Jessica sings with Cory Morrow regularly.

Thursday brought the return of some old friends, 3 Fools on 3 Stools (Doc Wesson, Curtis Tilton, and Jim Richmond) to the Tavern. It never ceases to amaze me, when these guys sing harmonies, it is heart stopping. Friday night, Wade Bowen and West 84 and the Magee Payne Band ushered in the Texas/OU weekend. It is some much fun to sling cocktails on nights when the crowd and band are all on the same vibe. It was one of those evenings when you look at your watch and say, “there is no way it has been three hours”.

I hate to discuss Saturday; my horns fell to the Sooners again and were shutout for the first time in 240+ games. The support for both teams was great and thanks to all the regulars who helped set up and contributed food.
That’s the recap; here is what’s on the way. This Thursday, the Peter Dawson Band and Dusty Deaton Band will be performing. Friday brings the return of Phil Pritchett & the Full Band to Woody’s, Quincy Harper will open. Next week, Brandon Rhyder and Randy Rogers.

All right, I have not waxed philosophically in a while, so here goes…..

I was sitting at the bar on Sunday watching a little ball, reading the paper, and a couple magazines, and conversing with a friend. Now I understand technology is wonderful, how else would I have this opportunity to share my thoughts, but I read an article that disturbed me. Picture this Internet access on a surfboard, Televisions in Refrigerators, Video Games on Telephones, what the hell? What is the need for this? Have we as a society lost sight of what makes a person? Where are the challenges? How do you teach you children to fend for themselves, find directions, choose to read, write, draw, play an instrument. I mean you can learn guitar on digital cable. Where is the human interaction? What happened to imagination? Where are the tinker toys, erector sets, and legos? In a time of elections and political debate, ask yourselves, what is a family today. You heard politicians say, “ Leave no child behind” but these are the same people putting computers in every classroom. I remember taking math classes without a calculator. Yes, war is an issue, our safety is an issue, tax reform, immigration, etc…whatever happened to the American Family, Education, Poverty? Republican or Democrat, Conservative or Liberal, Stop, Think, Sit down read a book, a magazine, a newspaper, turn off the television, walk away from you computer. Use your mind. Share with your children. They deserve the chance to learn to think, include them in you choices. Show them a window not your browser window.

VOTE! VOTE! VOTE! VOTE! VOTE! VOTE!

Peace,

Hey All,

Well this would be the first official “tale from the tavern”

I have to tell all of you, I take great pride in the fact, that Woody’s has grown from a little sports bar in the back of a shopping center, into the Regionally known Sports/Music Tavern that it is today. This could not have been achieved without the support of the great patrons we have come in contact with over the last four years. That’s right, this January 14th, Woody’s is four years old. Come out this Fall and join us for a cold beer, big game, or great band. I would also like to extend our thanks to the performers who have graced our stage, from it’s humble starts in the back corner to where it stands today. No one believed that three bartenders would actually open the bar of there dreams. I think you all know the rest. Grab your friends and head on over, Happy Hour is now 7 days a week( you have to take care of those that take care of you) and the Daily Specials still beat the pants off of the competition. As always every Thursday and Friday, the best performers from the Region share there wares on stage. And if you don’t make it for the shows, you can usually find one of there cd’s rotating in the jukebox. Keep your eyes glued to the new page, and ears peeled for more exciting news about the 4th Anniversary Bash at Woody’s.

Welcome,

Hey everyone, the new site is here. I would like to thank every one for hanging with us while we made a few adjustments. Check it out, let us know what you think.

Things at the Tavern are moving forward at break neck speed. Football season has officially kicked off with TCU’s win over Northwestern last Thursday night. Be sure to come out and see our new 8 ft Big Screen, and watch all of your favorite teams in High Definition Television and surround sound. As usual it spans beyond the sports enthusiast at Woody’s, we have moved our Music series to Thursday and Friday nights and added a Songwriter Showcase the first Tuesday of every Month. A lot of your favorite bands will be making there way across the stage this Fall, with a few new ones being introduced along the way. Come on out and take a look for yourself, pull up a stool and have a cold one.

Adios,
Bryan

Now the business is out of the way, a lyric from one of the great songwriters that claimed Austin as home, when the first Texas Revolution occurred.

Go somewhere no has ever been
Find myself alive with every breath
So I will know life when I meet my death”
